Time – Is There a Past, Present, and Future, or Are We All Just Winging It
Let us start with the single most confident lie every clock in your house is currently telling you. It is ticking away with total swagger, as if it personally knows what time it is, when in reality it is just a very small, very committed liar wearing a wrist band or hanging above your stove. Time itself, the actual philosophical substance of the thing, has been confusing humans since the first caveman looked at a sunset and thought “wait, where did today go, I only just woke up.”
So let us ask the big dumb question properly. Is there really a past, a present, and a future, or is the whole thing an elaborate group project where nobody did the reading and we are all just improvising off vibes?
The Past: A Suspiciously Unreliable Narrator
The past has a real image problem. It insists it is fixed, solid, already written, the one part of time you cannot mess with. And yet ask five family members about the same Thanksgiving dinner from six years ago and you will get five wildly different Thanksgivings, one of which apparently involved Uncle Gary crying about a football game and nobody else remembers that happening, including Uncle Gary.
The past, in other words, is less like a stone tablet and more like your group chat after a big night out. Everyone technically was there. No two people agree on what actually occurred. And somehow it is still treated as the objective record. Historians call this “primary source analysis.” The rest of us call it “well, that is one version of events.”
The Present: The Guest Who Never Actually Shows Up
Here is where things get genuinely funny, in a way that would make a physics professor sigh and a Buddhist monk smile knowingly. Try, right now, to actually catch the present moment. Go on. The second you notice “ah, this is the present,” that moment has already become the past, and a new “present” has rudely shown up uninvited to take its place, like a party guest who keeps arriving through a different door every time you turn around.
The present is basically time’s version of a mirage. You can see it. You can feel like you are standing in it. But the moment you reach out to grab it and hold it still, it has already scooted off to join the past, snickering the whole way. This is either deeply unsettling or the funniest ongoing prank in the entire universe, depending on how much poridge you have had.
The Future: The Overachiever With Zero Follow Through
The future gets treated like a responsible adult with a detailed five year plan, when in reality it is more like that one friend who swears they will definitely be there by 7 and shows up at 9:45 wearing a completely different outfit than the one they said they would wear, having also somehow acquired a dog. The future promises everything and guarantees nothing. It is the ultimate hype man, all confidence, no receipts.
And yet we build our entire lives around this notoriously flaky character. We save money for it. We diet for it. We set alarms for it. All while the future has never once, in the history of the universe, shown up exactly as advertised.
So Does Time Actually Have These Three Rooms, or Is It One Big Open Floor Plan
Physicists will tell you, with the smug delight of people who get to say something wild and technically correct, that past, present, and future may not be as separate as they feel. Certain interpretations of physics suggest that time behaves less like a hallway you walk down one room at a time and more like a single, enormous block where every moment, past, present, and future, already exists all at once, and your sense of “moving through time” is more like a spotlight sweeping across a stage that was fully built the whole time.
Which means somewhere in that block, a version of you is already reading the last line of this article, and somewhere else, a version of you has not started reading it yet, and honestly, both of those versions should relax, because clearly it all works out.
The Genuinely Uplifting Twist Hiding in All This Chaos
Here is the part where the jokes settle down and something actually useful climbs out. If the past is this unreliable, wobbly, subjectively remembered thing, then you are allowed to stop treating every old mistake as an unchangeable life sentence, because even the “facts” of your past are more flexible in meaning than you have been giving them credit for. The story you tell about what happened matters just as much as what technically happened.
If the present keeps slipping away the instant you try to grab it, that is not a design flaw, that is permission. You are not supposed to freeze it and inspect it forever. You are supposed to keep moving with it, imperfectly, a little too fast, mildly out of breath, exactly like everyone else who has ever lived.
And if the future is this unreliable hype man who never shows up exactly as promised, then you are released from the exhausting pressure of needing to predict it perfectly. Plan for it, sure. Save for it, absolutely. But do not spend the only moment you actually have access to, this slippery, mirage like present, worrying yourself sick over a guest who was never going to arrive on schedule anyway.
Thoughts From Somewhere Inside the Block
So is there really a past, present, and future? Apparently yes, no, and it is complicated, all at the same time, which honestly sounds about right for something invented by a species that still cannot agree on what way is ideal to swipe after natures call attendance. Wherever you actually are in the great confusing block of time right now, be gentle with your past, less obsessed with your future, and a little more amused by the ridiculous magic trick you are currently living inside, which is, against all odds, still somehow working.
